A Year 4 pupil from Horninglow Primary School, Sofia Velicko, was among nine talented children from across Staffordshire whose creative ceramic plate designs have been honoured in the ‘We Are Staffordshire Design a Plate’ competition ran by Staffordshire County Council.

The competition, for Staffordshire Day in May, invited Year 4 and Year 5 pupils from around the county to illustrate what Staffordshire means to them. Over 300 public votes were cast to determine the winners.

The winners’ designs were then brought to life as the plates were lovingly created and placed on display in Tamworth Castle, Brewhouse Arts Centre in Burton and Lichfield Cathedral.

Roz Winter, Headteacher at Horninglow, said: “Sofia worked so hard on the design of her plate, and it’s fantastic to see that her hard work has been recognised.

“For her design to be displayed at Tamworth Castle is such a special honour, and it’s wonderful for her to know that her artwork will be seen and enjoyed by so many people. She really is full of pride at what she has achieved”

The winners were celebrated with a special presentation at Gladstone Pottery Museum in Longton, where their designs were transformed into ceramic plates.

Kathy Hardy, CEO at Affinity Learning Partnership, of which the school is part, added: “It’s truly amazing to see all the ways in which our children are celebrated. All of us at Affinity Learning Partnership send our congratulations to Sofia.

“These are exactly the kind of things we want our children to engage with. It is about helping them understand their communities, find their talents and learn that hard work brings rewards!”
